Why Miniature Donkeys?
· Donkeys are very intelligent and have loving personalities. One of the original importers of the breed to the U.S., stated, "Miniature Donkeys possess the affectionate nature of a Newfoundland, the resignation of a cow, the durability of a mule, the courage of a tiger, and the intellectual capability only slightly inferior to man's."
- They are relatively easy-keepers.
- Their size along with their stable dispositions make them ideal for children, seniors, in fact, people of all ages.
- Miniature donkeys are routinely used for therapy purposes bringing joy to the lives of seniors and the disabled.
- Miniature donkeys are so versatile. They can be shown in halter, showmanship, driving (pulling carts) and many other performance classes. They are favorites in any parade or social gathering.
- They are just so much FUN!
The Move
A few years ago, our family moved from a typical urban lifestyle comprised of hectic schedules, small residential lots, traffic, lots of buildings and concrete, shopping malls galore, people and more people located in the heart of Southern California to a more rural atmosphere in Middle Tennessee.
Moving to the South, we had to learn to eat fried chicken, grits and greens; speak English, the Southern Way and adjust to a more rural lifestyle. We adapted very quickly and love our new life. We purchased an older 50’s era Massey Ferguson tractor for our property, attend tractor pulls, dirt track car races, a variety of music festivals, Walking Horse shows, mule days in Columbia, TN, car shows, visits to civil war sites, plantations, etc. The South is wonderful and people are great!
We moved our dogs, cats and birds from California to our new home in Tennessee. On the new property were a Tennessee Walking Horse and Spotted Saddle Horse which we purchased from the seller. Both horses had not been ridden in awhile and with time and attention, they both settled down and became wonderful riding horses.
The Herd
We accompanied a relative to visit a breeder of Miniature Donkeys. Well, we could not escape the “spell of the Miniature Donkeys” and came home with two. After learning as much as we could about the breed, doing extensive research and spending time with our two new donkeys, these fabulous animals captivated our hearts.
We spent a great deal of time looking at various pedigrees, breeder’s sites, bloodlines, etc and noticed that there was a herd “for sale” in Texas. We flew into the Dallas area to look at the herd and now have a Miniature Donkey herd on our premises.
The foundation stock for the Cobra Miniature Donkeys was obtained from the original animals imported from Sicily and Sardinia by Augustus Busch of the Busch beer fame and Mr. Robert Green (a New York stockbroker). In many of the older pedigrees today, you will find Cobra ancestry.
Over the past 30 years, J.T. Smith’s goal in breeding the Cobra Miniature Donkeys was to maintain and preserve a healthy animal while adhering to the original characteristics of the breed.
Legendary Farms is truly honored and blessed to carry on the legacy of these fabulous Cobra Miniature donkeys as well as donkeys we have obtained from other fine, reputable breeders.
